About the event
Death's Door Passage at the tip of Door County is a notoriously treacherous waterway, known for its rapidly changing weather conditions, unpredictable and swift currents, and rocky reefs. Two islands in the passage have lighthouses to help ships navigate through the passage - but in the days before GPS, what happened when the fog or other weather obscured the beacon?
We'll explore the types and characteristics of the fog signals used on the islands over time. We'll examine the physical process in which sound is generated, and you'll get to see small examples of these signals - including a small steam whistle.
The centerpiece of the display will be one of the horns actually used on Plum Island, which was given back to the Fish and Wildlife Service a few years ago. Learn what it looked and sounded like in operation.
