Evolution of Fog Signals
Friday, June 6, 2025
Presentation is roughly 90 minutes
Demonstrations begin at: 10am, 12pm, 3pm
@ Kewaunee's Harbor Park
(Milwaukee & Harrison St)
Join our VP Jake Heffernan at Harbor Park in Kewaunee on Friday, June 6, 2025 and learn about the "Evolution of Lighthouse Fog Signals." You will even be given the incredible chance to experience them for yourself!
Jake will talk about the technological evolution from cannons to whistles to sirens to the diaphone and on to modern "pure tone" signals. The best part - you'll be able to hear them in person! By sounding a relatively small cannon, a 5" diameter steam whistle, and a "Type B" diaphone horn, you'll be able to understand the way each sound is created and the increasing sound power as the sound is generated more efficiently throughout time.
This is an immersive, fun presentation for young and old alike!

Kewaunee Harbor Walking Tour
Saturday, June 7, 2025
Tours approximately 2 hours long
Tours begin at: 11am, 12:30pm, 2pm
No Public Tours Today - Ticketed Walking Tours ONLY
Experience 4 historic Kewaunee attractions in one tour!
See and learn about the World's Largest Grandfather Clock, tour the Kewaunee Fire Museum (normally closed), the WWII era tug Ludington, and the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse on this guided walking tour of the Kewaunee Harbor.
Beginning at the clock, a knowledgeable local guide will share information about the clock's creation before unlocking the Fire Museum - showcasing several historic fire apparatus including an 1870 chemical pumper and a 1927 pumping engine still in working condition.
The group will then walk (or can drive) across Milwaukee Street to the WWII era tug Ludington for an explanation on the tug's service ferrying ammunition barges across the English Channel in preparation for the D-Day invasion and its post-war service in creating the harbors of Lake Michigan. A self-guided tour from the engine room to the pilothouse awaits you next!
Next you'll learn about the development of the City of Kewaunee - driven by the commerce of Lake Michigan before beginning a leisurely stroll along the harbor wall, towards the lighthouse.
You'll pass Kewaunee's original 1891 Railroad Depot - now a private residence, be able to view the remnants of the railroad carferry docks and the 1893 Lifesaving Station across the harbor.
You'll then walk to the end of the south pier for a (private) full tour of the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse.
Ticket proceeds support the Tug Ludington & the restoration of the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse.
