As the warm breezes of summer fade to the cold chill of winter, we are looking to what's next for the lighthouse. The non-profit Friends of the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse contributed $14,000 in donations for the completion of two restoration projects this season.
Next, the City Preservation Committee will be working with a historic architect on planning the next steps as the restoration moves inside the building. Meanwhile, the Friends are thinking about new ways to raise funds for those anticipated projects.
Kewaunee City Council recently approved the installation of a donation post at the base of the pier, with funds to benefit the restoration of the Kewaunee Pierhead lighthouse. This simple addition to the waterfront has the potential to raise thousands of dollars in donations each year - just by existing. The post will be located near the paver bricks, next to an existing reader board explaining the history of the lighthouse. Visitors to the pierhead will be able to donate cash at the pillar, or scan QR codes to donate electronically.
The board of directors for the Friends has explored several options for fabricating the donation post, but have decided to have the project completed locally, using students from Kewaunee High School's STORM Manufacturing Class.
Two students from the class are now in the process of fabricating the post, which is expected to be installed sometime this spring.
Stay tuned to our website or Facebook pages for updates on when the new donation post will be installed!
